CREATING A JAPANESE SPA BATHROOM
In our West Mercer residence, we designed in a modern Japanese soaking tub that the client had dreamed of, and that created the foundation of a full vision of a peaceful, Japanese inspired aesthetic with traditional authentic features such as an Ipe wood platform that allows for intentional water overspill.
A new window that fills the end of the room above the tub allowed for both a natural focal point and a stunning lake view while soaking.
The Ipe wood is tied in throughout the space with custom mirrors and a handcrafted cap on the wall tile. Other elements in the room such as faucets and lighting are intentionally very simple and modern to keep a ritual feel to the bathroom.
The Japanese soaking tub—or "ofuro"—isn't a new idea. This type of tub has been used in Japan for centuries as an indoor extension of bathing in the country's plentiful hot springs. The bath has always held significant importance in Japanese culture to cleanse and purify both the body and soul, and this ritual is now catching on in the West.
These Japanese soaking tubs have built-in seats and are much deeper than a regular American-style tub—about 27 inches deep, so that you sit upright and the water comes up to your chin, making it a true deep soaking tub. A step is needed to get into this deeper style tub and a floor drain is necessary for overflow. The faucet can be mounted anywhere so here we offset it so it does not block the view.
The shower tile from Ann Sacks emulates shou sugi ban, a centuries old Japanese technique of preserving and finishing wood by charring it with fire.
Here is a detail of the shampoo niches that mix multiple sizes and orientations of the tile and incorporate a metal accent liner to provide interest in the otherwise neutral scheme. Sills of the niches are the matching quartz vanity counter material for durability and easy cleaning.
