INCORPORATING EXISTING FURNISHINGS, MOMENTOS & ART
We have had the question come up a lot lately "Can you incorporate our existing furniture, momentos and art into the new home you are creating for us?" The answer is yes! We want to share a project that addressed a solution while reflecting the homeowners' individual lifestyle, personality and aesthetic.
While many of our clients turn to CKID for a plan to clear out the old and bring in the new, just as many are looking for a refresh that incorporates a few- or many- of their existing furnishings and mementos. Whether motivated by nostalgia or budget, we help our clients discover that refreshing existing belongings achieves a look and feel that is uniquely customized to them.
Our client’s vision for an interior update of her Eastlake townhouse took an unexpected turn when she inherited a number of antique furnishings while we were in the middle of the design phase.
The acquisitions included a chest-of-drawers, several armchairs, a petite boudoir chair and antique framed art – all traditional pieces that initially seemed to clash with our client’s ultra-modern vision.
Including these pieces in the redesign was important to her, they brought back fond memories and were still in relatively good form despite their age. We walked her through the process of identifying the most meaningful items, then incorporated them to create a look that honored their heritage. By introducing bold new fabrics and positioning the traditional pieces integrally with new, modern furniture, CKID was able to extend the lives of these inherited pieces while capturing the modern expression envisioned for our client’s new in-city townhome.
The traditional chest-of-drawers has taken up residence in the home’s entryway, playing host to a new contemporary concrete lamp and flanked by a modern mirror and custom Nepalese rug.
The inherited furniture in our Eastlake client’s townhome takes center stage with reupholstered antique armchairs in a bold pattern grounded in tradition yet irreverent enough to complement the space’s more modern elements.
An inherited petite chair is reupholstered in a soft green velvet and antique black and white shadow prints look renewed juxtaposed against the modern bed and edgier elements such as a hair on hide bench, fur throw and leopard print pillows.
